Figurative Language Cards provides an engaging way to practice comprehending the meaning of various forms of figurative language. The Figurative Language Cards kit offers four decks (Idioms, Proverbs, Similes, and Metaphors & Clichés) that review various figurative language constructions. The decks are appropriate for use with children and adolescents with language delay, hearing impaired individuals, and those learning English as a second language.
Each deck has numerous full-color illustrations, making them attractive and engaging to youths. These cards can be used in many ways to practice understanding and using figurative language. The focus is to be creative in using these cards.
Suggested Activities:
• Use the Idioms deck to play "Go Fish" where students try to match the idioms with the card depicting the actual meaning of the expression.
• Use the decks with a favorite game board. Students take turns choosing a figurative language card and explaining its meaning. If the explanation is accurate, the student may move forward.
• Use the cards as flash cards for group, peer-directed, or individual practice.
• Ask each student to tell or write about a situation or story that might include the figurative expressions depicted on selected cards.
• Have students design answer cards for the Proverbs, Similes, and Metaphors & Clichés decks and use these answer cards in the activities described above.
