The Software is the primary instructional component. It has three levels, organized by grade readability (4th, 5th, and 6th), with a total of 90 lessons. Each lesson features a reading passage of 250 to 325 words. The passages have age-neutral and nonfiction themes, and are crafted to fit precise Lexile and Flesch-Kincaid measures. Students spend 25-40 minutes per lesson; each lesson follows a set sequence: pre-test, noticing word parts, mastering challenging words, focusing on phrases, reading by phrases, post-test. Software provides speech and visual supports for word parts, whole words, and phrases. Pre- and post-tests include comprehension questions. Software features professional narration, unlimited student logins, and comprehensive data collection.
The Teacher’s Manual guides you through the lesson sequence, provides step-by-step software instructions, and detailed alignments state and national standards including the Common Core, plus describes the research foundations. The Teacher's Manual also describes the research foundations of the program and the outcomes of field-testing. It includes a PDF of the Passages to Reading book with a Classroom License for printouts.
Passages to Reading book is a collection of the 90 passages and comprehension questions included in the Developing Reading Fluency Software. It complements the Software lessons and extends them to cover additional English Language Arts standards like listening and reading comprehension. The book includes an analysis of readability for each passage plus a self-reporting data system so students can keep track of their progress.
