When They Can't Write is an essential text for teachers who work with secondary students who have not yet mastered the basics of composition. The multisensory, structured, interactive strategies described in this reference have enabled students with learning disabilities to succeed with writing in high school - and beyond.

This teacher's resource covers the basic composition tasks expected of secondary students. The opening chapter describes instructional strategies appropriate for middle and high school students. The following chapters are organized for sequential instruction of:
  • sentence patterns
  • signal words within more complex sentence types
  • descriptive and anecdotal paragraphs
  • journal writing
  • personal letters
  • news paragraphs
  • academic paragraphs

When They Can't Write recognizes that students with writing difficulties require direct instruction in the various forms of written expression.

Writing tasks, which are divided into sequential lessons, include a clear statement of purpose, an introductory device, brief notes for students, and multisensory teaching suggestions. Writing process activities are at the core of the lessons.

Challenging thinking skills, tapping creativity, and encouraging an analytical approach to writing and revising are major aspects of the program. It is effective for both the classroom settings and tutorials.

Practice Book 1 and Practice Book 2 are reproducible pdfs on the CD.
  • Practice Book 1 accompanies the lessons for all of the basic sentence patterns.
  • Practice Book 2 supplements the remaining lessons.

Because the lessons are to be photocopied, the Manual and Practice Books may be used repeatedly.
