Myths and Folktales was conceived not only as a source of recreational reading but as a means of providing a foundation that can add immeasurably to what E.D. Hirsch calls "cultural literacy." Today's conversations and various forms of entertainment, including reading, are rife with all manner of literary and historical references. It's a highly satisfying experience when a reference to King Midas, Paul Bunyan, Beowulf, or the Pied Piper snaps smartly into the brain's store of knowledge. It's a feeling our students should be allowed to savor and enjoy.
Following each story are challenging activities that will add to the overall enjoyment and contribute to the cultural literacy goal.
