Understanding Math Story Problems–Second Edition teaches students how to comprehend and use the language they need to solve math story problems. Often, students who have difficulty with math story problems—including students with hearing impairment or students who have language and/or learning difficulties— can do the necessary mathematical calculations correctly but are unaware that specific words in a problem can assist them in choosing the kind of calculation to use to solve the problem.
This revised program still has three levels but combines them into one comprehensive book with lots of reproducible activities. Level 1 is for students who read at the second-grade level and requires only simple addition and subtraction. Level 2 is for students who read at a third-grade level. It involves addition and subtraction, including borrowing and carrying, and simple multiplication. Level 3 is for those who read at the fourth-grade level or above and contains addition, subtraction, multiplication, and simple division.
Each level is divided into three major sections: a teaching section, a practice section, and an evaluation section. The primary aims of the teaching sections are to:
- present the key math vocabulary words required for solving the problems correctly,
- assist the student in reasoning through the information presented in the problem, and
- guide the student through the steps needed to solve the problem.
Understanding Math Story Problems–Second Edition is a valuable tool for teachers and parents. Let this program assist you in helping your students to better comprehend the language clues in story problems so they can solve problems and achieve success.
